Harvard Health also points out that studies have found behavioral effects in some children while failing to demonstrate that artificial colors are responsible for ADHD itself. According to Harvard, the evidence suggests that certain children may have an unusual sensitivity to food additives rather than artificial colors being universally toxic to the nervous system.
Do Food Dyes Cause ADHD?
There is an important distinction between triggering or worsening certain symptoms and causing ADHD.
Current evidence does not establish that artificial food dyes cause ADHD. ADHD is a complex condition, and diet alone is not considered its underlying cause. The FDA has concluded that a causal relationship between certified color additives and behavioral effects in children has not been established, while acknowledging that some children may be sensitive to these substances.

Recording what a child eats and noting changes in behavior, concentration, mood, or sleep may help identify patterns. How Can Parents Reduce Exposure?
One of the simplest ways to reduce artificial food dyes is to read ingredient labels. Look for names such as:
- Red 40 or Allura Red
- Yellow 5 or Tartrazine
- Yellow 6 or Sunset Yellow
- Blue 1
- Blue 2
- Green 3
- Artificial color or artificial coloring
Parents can also emphasize naturally colorful foods such as berries, oranges, carrots, tomatoes, leafy greens, and other fruits and vegetables. These foods provide color along with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients.
Reducing highly processed foods can also naturally reduce a child’s exposure to artificial colors. Instead of focusing exclusively on individual additives, families can build meals around whole or minimally processed foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, eggs, fish, poultry, and other nutrient-rich foods.
