
Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is more than an irregular heartbeat. The condition can allow blood to pool in the heart, increasing the chance that a blood clot will form and travel to the brain, where it can cause a stroke. Because of this, managing AFib often involves more than medication or procedures—it also includes lifestyle measures such as staying physically active, maintaining a healthy weight, controlling blood pressure and avoiding smoking.
New research offers encouraging news for people who may find traditional exercise goals intimidating: even relatively low levels of physical activity were associated with a lower risk of stroke and death among people with AFib. A large Norwegian study involving more than 87,000 adults found that people who reported low, moderate or high levels of physical activity had lower stroke risks than inactive participants. The researchers found that the relationship between activity and lower stroke risk was similar in people with and without AFib, suggesting that people living with the condition may benefit from simply becoming more active.
Small Amounts of Movement May Still Matter
The study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association in August 2026, followed participants for about 15 years. Researchers divided people into groups based on how often, how long and how intensely they exercised.
Compared with inactive adults, those reporting low levels of physical activity had a 9% lower risk of stroke, while those with moderate activity had a 19% lower risk. People in the highest activity group had an 18% lower stroke risk. Physical activity was also associated with a lower risk of death from any cause. Among people with AFib, staying active was associated with an estimated additional 0.5 to 1.2 years of life compared with being inactive.
The findings do not prove that exercise directly prevents strokes. Because this was an observational study rather than a randomized clinical trial, other differences between active and inactive participants may have contributed to the results. Still, the researchers say the findings add to evidence that physical activity can be an important part of preventing complications in people with AFib.
Why Exercise Can Help
Exercise can improve several factors that are closely connected with AFib and stroke. Regular physical activity can help control blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and body weight—all of which influence cardiovascular health. Mayo Clinic recommends regular physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle for people with AFib, while Johns Hopkins Medicine also lists regular exercise among strategies for reducing AFib-related complications.
Exercise may also help people manage AFib itself. Cleveland Clinic notes that regular activity is part of managing the condition, and structured exercise programs have been associated with fewer AFib recurrences and improved quality of life. Current AFib guidelines similarly recommend appropriately prescribed moderate-to-vigorous exercise to reduce AFib symptoms and burden and improve functional capacity.
You Don’t Have to Start With a Hard Workout
For someone who has been inactive, exercise does not necessarily mean running, lifting heavy weights or spending an hour at the gym. Walking, gardening, cycling, swimming and other moderate activities can count. The NHS recommends that people with AFib aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, but activity can be built up gradually.
The recent findings are particularly encouraging because they suggest that doing something may be better than doing nothing. Someone who currently spends most of the day sitting might begin with a short walk, then gradually increase the duration or frequency as fitness improves.
The American Heart Association generally recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week for adults. But people with AFib should work with their healthcare professional to determine what level and type of exercise is appropriate for their individual condition.
More Exercise Isn’t Always Better
People with AFib should also avoid assuming that harder exercise automatically means greater benefits. The NHS advises people with AFib not to exercise too much or too intensely, particularly because strenuous activity can trigger symptoms in some people. People should also avoid exercising when they are experiencing AFib symptoms and should ask their doctor about appropriate activity if they are uncertain.
This is especially important for anyone who has recently been diagnosed with AFib, has significant heart disease or experiences chest pain, severe shortness of breath, dizziness or fainting during activity.
Exercise Is Only One Part of Stroke Prevention
While the new findings are promising, exercise should not be viewed as a replacement for medical treatment. AFib can substantially increase stroke risk, and some people need anticoagulant medication to reduce the chance of blood clots. The appropriate treatment depends on an individual’s age, medical history and other stroke-risk factors.
Other lifestyle measures matter too. Managing high blood pressure, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a heart-healthy diet, avoiding tobacco and limiting excessive alcohol can all contribute to better cardiovascular health.
The Bottom Line
For people living with AFib, the message from the latest research is reassuring: you don’t necessarily have to become a serious athlete to gain health benefits from moving more. Even low levels of regular physical activity were associated with a lower risk of stroke and death in a large, long-term study.
Starting small may be a practical way forward. A short walk, a little gardening or another comfortable form of movement can be a first step toward becoming more active. Over time, those small efforts can add up—but anyone with AFib should discuss an appropriate exercise plan with their healthcare professional, particularly before starting a new or more strenuous routine.
