Spices That May Help Prevent Blood Clotting

Blood clotting, also known as coagulation, is a process that prevents excessive bleeding when a blood vessel is injured. Once the injury has healed, the body will naturally dissolve the blood clot (1). However, there are situations wherein the blood clots too much, leading to complications that can be potentially dangerous (2).

Luckily, there are some herbs that may reduce our risk of clots. Check them out below:

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a savory spice found in the bark of Cinnamomum trees. It contains coumarin, a chemical that acts as a powerful anticoagulant or blood thinner which prevents blood clots from developing or prevents preexisting blood clots from forming complete blockages, leading to heart attacks or strokes. This highly delicious spice may also lower blood pressure and relieve inflammation caused by inflammatory conditions like arthritis (3,4).

Caution: Take moderate cinnamon consumption if taking a blood thinner. Too much coumarin can cause bleeding and damage to the liver.

Garlic

Garlic has been used medicinally for thousands of years. This superfood possesses natural antibiotic and antimicrobial properties. The herb contains ajoene, an active major compound found in chopped fresh garlic which helps prevent the formation of blood clots (5,6).

According to studies, odorless garlic powder shows antithrombotic activities. An antithrombotic agent is a substance that reduces the formation of blood clots (thrombi) (7).

The recommended dose of garlic is two to four cloves per day.

Ginger

This well-known spice contains gingerol which has been shown to prevent blood cells and platelets from clotting and clumping. Ginger is used as an all-natural blood thinner to help prevent heart attacks, strokes, and other heart-related conditions. It may also help prevent cholesterol production in the liver (8).

Moreover, ginger also contains salicylate, a natural chemical that may also keep blood from clotting (3).

Turmeric

Aside from giving curry dishes a yellow color, this spice has been used for many years as natural medicine. According to the study, its main component curcumin acts as an anticoagulant. Having a daily dose of turmeric spice may help people maintain the anticoagulant status of the blood (9).

We can mix turmeric with hot water to make a comforting tea or simply add it to soups or curry.

Note:  If you are taking a blood thinner, talk with a doctor or nutritionist before using these spices.
