These antioxidants may help ease digestion and reduce the risk of irritation in our digestive tract (3). In a study that compared the antioxidant activity of 26 spices, researchers found that cinnamon is the clear winner, outranking “superfoods” like garlic and oregano (4).
Regular consumption of cinnamon has a stimulating effect on gastric juices and stomach acids. Due to this, digestion becomes more efficient and effective, thereby leading to a lowered risk of constipation, gas bloating, cramping, and stomach upset (5).
A pilot study involving 31 people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) revealed that a cinnamon-containing remedy designed for constipation-predominant IBS (IBS-C) may help increase bowel movement by 20% and reduce straining, bloating ad abdominal pain. Experts believe that cinnamon may help in promoting intestinal motility or have a mild laxative effect (6).
To reap the benefits of cinnamon, we can have cinnamon tea.
Boil water (about 8 oz) and simply add 1 tsp ground cinnamon. Allow the cinnamon to steep for 8-10 minutes. Some honey can be added. Have this tea two to three times daily.
