Grapes: A Potential Ally In Our Fight Against Cancer

Filling up on healthy foods is important for us to be able to prevent or fight cancer. There are certain fruits that contain health-promoting compounds that can significantly affect our health. These fruits provide antioxidants that fight the growth of cancer cells or lower our risk of this deadly disease.

Grapes Against Cancer

Grapes, one of our favorite fruit, have a perfect collision of sweetness and tanginess. Aside from being a tasty treat, the fruit also possesses qualities that are beneficial to our health. Grapes contain natural chemicals that may help stop the spread of cancer cells. They are loaded with resveratrol, an antioxidant that has been found to have the potential of possibly stopping cancer from starting in the breast, liver, stomach, and lymphatic system.

In laboratory studies, results revealed that resveratrol prevents the kind of damage known to trigger the cancer process in the cell, tissue, and animal models. Moreover, resveratrol triggers the death of leukemic and colon cancer tumors and blocks the development of skin, breast, and leukemia cancers.

Red and purple grapes have significantly more resveratrol than green grapes. What’s more? Red grapes have seeds filled with the super antioxidant activin, a cancer-fighting chemical that may offer protection against certain types of cancer, heart diseases, and other chronic degenerative diseases.

Lindsey Wohlford, a wellness dietitian at MD Anderson, says:

“The grape’s skin has the most resveratrol, so leave the skin intact.”

In addition to resveratrol, grapes also contain proanthocyanidins, strong antioxidants that are found in grape seed extract, and protect cells from free radicals.
