Natural Remedies For Poison Ivy Rash

Exposure to poison ivy plants can cause rashes, itching swelling, and blisters that might spread to other parts of the body. The rash is caused by urushiol, a sticky oil found in poison ivy sap. We can be exposed to it if we touch live or dead poison ivy plants or happen to touch clothes, animals, tools, or camping gear that have come into contact with urushiol.

Cucumber slices are one of the simplest yet effective home remedies that we can try for poison ivy. We can simply place some cooling cucumber slices on the affected area or create a cucumber paste by mashing it up and then apply it on the rash for some soothing effect.

Cold Compress

Reduce itching and inflammation with the help of cool, wet compresses. To do this, we need to run a clean washcloth under cold water and wring off excess water. Apply to the skin for 15 to 30 minutes. Repeat this several times a day as needed.

Oatmeal Bath

Oatmeal has been found to possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can benefit a variety of skin conditions. Have an oatmeal to a lukewarm bath and soak in the tub for up to 30 minutes. Doing so may provide symptom relief.

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

Apple cider vinegar has a number of medicinal qualities that are effective against poison ivy. Try soaking a brown paper bag in apple cider vinegar, then place the bag on the rash to draw out the toxins and soothe itching and swelling.

Another method using ACV is by soaking a cotton ball in one teaspoon apple cider vinegar or a 50/50 mixture of apple cider vinegar and water. Apply it on the rash. Repeat three to four times a day.

Baking Soda

Also known as sodium bicarbonate, this home remedy is an inexpensive, safe, and often times, effective way to care for our skin and treat health concerns.

When it comes to poison ivy rash, baking soda can help reduce itching and irritation. Dissolve 1/2 a cup of baking soda in a tub of warm water and soak for up to 30 minutes.
