Different Natural Cough Syrups That Are Worth A Try

Coughing helps our throat get rid of phlegm and other irritants. While there are available over-the-counter cough syrups to provide temporary relief, we can also make our own herbal cough syrup that is free from chemicals that may harm our health.

Lemon, Cinnamon, and Honey Mixture

Boil 1 cup honey until it becomes thin and add one tablespoon cinnamon powder and juice of one lemon. Keep away from cough by taking this mixture every 2 hours and during bedtime. We may also add a teaspoon of dry ginger powder to help soothe the throat.

Milk With Turmeric

Milk and turmeric mixture is considered to be a good natural cough suppressant as it can help soothe the mucous lining and reduce the cough episodes. Simply add a pinch of turmeric powder in a cup of hot milk and drink it before bedtime to prevent nocturnal cough.

Olive Oil, Lemons, And Honey Mixture

This remedy will require us to add ½ cup of honey, ½ cup olive oil, and lemon juice (from 5 or more lemons) to a small pot and then stir. Heat over medium heat just until steaming. Remove from heat, let cool and then place into a jar with a lid. Store in the refrigerator. Take 1 tablespoon as needed.

Thyme And Honey Syrup

Thyme is an expectorant and antispasmodic. This only means that it may help loosen up any mucus to make it easier to cough up and help prevent involuntary coughing fits.

Combine the 4 ounces thyme leaf and flower and 4 cups of water in a pan over low heat. Cover with a lid left slightly ajar, and simmer until the liquid is reduced by half, about 45 minutes.  Strain the liquid and discard the herbs. Let mixture cool until just warm, then add 1 cup raw, organic honey, and stir well. Have it 3 times a day.

Holy Basil Leaves, Ginger Powder, And Honey Mixture

Simply boil holy basil leaves and ginger powder in a cup of water. Wait until the water reduces to half of the original quantity. Add a teaspoon of honey into it and drink when it is warm.

Honey-Onion-Garlic Mixture

Combine half a cup each of honey and water. Chop one onion and one clove of garlic and add it to the mixture. Allow the mixture to steep overnight and strain it in the morning. Have it 2-3 times a day. Store it in the refrigerator.
