Heatstroke is one of the common problems that is associated with staying outdoors for too long. This happens when a person is dehydrated and his body temperature is more than the normal temperature which is 37 degrees Celsius. Heatstroke can even damage the vital organs if the body temperature rises above 40 degrees Celsius.
To lower our risk of possible heat stroke, there are certain tips we need to follow.
Stay Hydrated All The Time
When a person is dehydrated heat stroke occurs. This only means that the best way to prevent this is by drinking as much water as we can. We should always provide our bodies with water even if we are not thirsty. Aside from plain water, lemon water with honey is also a good option.
Eat Hydrating Foods
Aside from water, eating fruits and vegetables that are hydrating can help avoid dehydration and the possibility of heatstroke. Consume foods that are high in water content and have valuable electrolytes like magnesium, potassium, calcium, and sodium. These electrolytes help in keeping blood pressure levels stable, maintaining fluid balance, and helping with nerve signaling. The best foods we should eat include the following:
- Coconut water
- Iceberg lettuce
Avoid Caffeine And Alcohol
Caffeinated and alcoholic drinks act as a diuretic. These beverages may cause the fluids to move out of the body quicker than normal. It is recommended to stick to plain water and other healthy options if we need a drink.
Avoid Direct Sunlight
We should limit our time indoors during hot days. It is advised to stay in the shade if we really need to go outside on a very hot day, especially when the sun is at its hottest. Bring an umbrella for added protection or play it cool in a hat with a wide brim and sunglasses.
Wear The Right Clothes
Wear loose-fitting clothes if it is too hot outside. Brightly colored shirts or dress should be avoided as they only absorb heat. Choose lightly colored clothing in natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, or silk so that the body can breathe without breaking a sweat.
How To Lower Body Heat Quickly
Have a cold foot bath. Simply add cold water and ice cubes to a bucket of water and soak for up to 20 minutes. A few drops of peppermint essential oil can also be added for some cooling effect. Doing this may help cool the body.
Apply some aloe vera gel. Lower the body temperature by applying aloe vera gel to the skin. The inside gel of a fresh plant or a pure aloe vera gel can be applied.
Drink peppermint tea. Peppermint has cooling properties due to its high menthol content. Make a hot or iced peppermint tea and drink it throughout the day. Aside from making a person feel better, the tea will also help a person sweat more and cool down his body.
