Simple Home Remedies That Can Help Get Rid Of Dandruff

Dandruff is a condition that is associated with an itchy scalp and flakiness. It is mostly caused by the presence of Malassezia, a yeast-like fungus that feeds on the oils present on the scalp. Too much of these fungi cause our skin to dry out and become irritated thereby resulting in dandruff and other dry skin problems. Other known causes of dandruff include oily skin, dry skin, infrequent shampooing and skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

Here are some of the simplest home remedies we can try to naturally get rid of dandruff.

Lemons

Lemon has been known to be an effective remedy against dandruff. This effect is mainly attributed to its citric acid content and strong antimicrobial properties that curb the fungal activity happening on the scalp.

For this remedy, we just have to massage 2 tablespoons lemon juice into the scalp and rinse with water. Then, stir 1 teaspoon lemon juice into 1 cup water and rinse the hair with it. Repeat this method daily for the best results.

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera gel has antibacterial and antifungal properties as well as several bioactive compounds, such as amino acids and antioxidants that may reduce dandruff.

Application of the gel into the scalp before shampooing can help reduce inflammation, which can help people with dandruff symptoms, such as itchiness.

Apple Cider Vinegar

The acidity levels of apple cider vinegar change the pH of the scalp thus making it harder for the yeast to grow.  It also works as a natural hair cleanser and helps unclog pores and hair follicles. For this remedy, we simply need to mix a quarter cup apple cider vinegar with a quarter cup water in a spray bottle and spritz on the scalp. Wrap the head in a towel and let sit for 15 minutes to an hour, then wash the hair as usual. Do this twice a week.

Baking Soda

Baking soda or sodium bicarbonate possesses antifungal properties that may help fight the fungus responsible for dandruff. It also acts as a gentle exfoliant to remove dead skin cells and reduce scaling and itchiness.

Have baking soda directly to wet hair and massaging it into the scalp. Let it sit for a minute or two, then continue shampooing the hair as usual.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is often used as a natural remedy for dandruff. It may help improve skin hydration and prevent dryness, which can worsen dandruff. Before showering, massage 3-5 tablespoons of coconut oil into the scalp and let sit for about an hour. Shampoo normally. For best results, we can also use a shampoo that already contains coconut oil.
