The Real Reasons Behind Burning Throat Sensation

Burning or sore throat is just common and isn’t a cause of concern. It can occur on its own or alongside other symptoms that can be treated at home. The only key to recover from this is by getting lots of rest and drinking plenty of fluids.

Here Are The Common Causes Of Throat Burn

Viral Infection

One of the most common causes of throat burn is a viral infection. It may cause body aches, white patches on tonsils, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, cough, runny nose, hoarseness and diarrhea in children. It can be treated by taking rest and having some homemade remedies.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Or Acid Reflux

Heartburn, one of the symptoms of acid reflux, is associated with the backing up of acid from the stomach to the esophagus. This harsh acid creates a burning sensation at the back of our throat and chest and gives a sour or bitter taste in the throat and mouth.

Aside from this, acid reflux may also cause a constant sensation of something in the throat, excessive phlegm in the throat, chronic cough, hoarseness, and chronic throat irritation.

Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS)

This condition is often associated with a burning, scalding, or tingling feeling in the mouth that may occur every day for months or longer. It may be caused by problems with nerves, or a condition like dry mouth.

The burning pain can be felt in the throat and entire mouth including the tongue, lips, cheeks, and the roof of our moth. A person suffering from this condition may also experience increased thirst, loss of taste and a metallic or bitter taste in the mouth.

Inflammation Of The Esophagus

This is also called esophagitis. This condition is associated with the inflammation of the lining of the esophagus, the tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach. If left untreated, this condition may cause difficulty or pain in swallowing, ulcers, and scarring of the esophagus.

Postnasal Drip

Postnatal drip is a condition wherein the mucus that normally lines the nose build-up to the point where it drips down the back of the throat, thus causing a cough, irritation, and triggers a burning sensation in the throat. Some of the main causes of a postnasal drip are viral infection, allergies, and sinus infection.

Common Cold

The common cold is usually common but isn’t serious. Most adults get 2-3 colds every year. Some of its other symptoms include runny nose, sneezing, body aches, headaches, stuffy nose, and low fever.

How To Deal With Throat Burn Naturally

  1. Drink more warm fluids such as hot soups, or tea with honey.
  2. Throat burn can also be reduced by gargling saltwater. Simply add some salt to warm water and gargle it a few times in a day to experience some relief.
  3. Drink lots of extra fluids, especially water.
  4. Turn on a cool-mist humidifier to add moisture to the air. This will prevent the throat from drying out.
  5. Keep the throat warm to reduce soreness. Heat relaxes muscles and can soothe the pain. Gently wrap a scarf around the neck to keep it warm.
