Cinnamon And Weight Loss

Some of us might be worried about our bulging stomach. According to experts, adding a piping hot cuppa of cinnamon tea into our daily diet might help. It acts by regulating blood sugar levels, boosting metabolism and improving insulin function which can all help a person lose some extra pounds.

Cinnamon is a popular spice that comes from the branches of trees of the “Cinnamomum” family. It is a great source of fiber, manganese, and calcium. Regular consumption of cinnamon can help treat problems with the digestive system, diabetes, loss of appetite, and other conditions.

In a study published in the Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology in 2012, Japanese researchers have found that cinnamon may help in fighting visceral fat in mice.

In a separate study at the University of Michigan Life Sciences Institute, a team of researchers discovered that essential oil in cinnamon known as cinnamaldehyde (responsible for its flavor) attacks fat cells and could be used as a treatment to fight obesity. It can boost metabolic health by prodding fat cells to start burning energy — a process called thermogenesis. The findings of this study were published in the December issue of the journal Metabolism.

Jun Wu, a research assistant professor at UM’s Life Sciences Institute, says:

“Cinnamon has been part of our diets for thousands of years, and people generally enjoy it. So if it can help protect against obesity, too, it may offer an approach to metabolic health that is easier for patients to adhere to.”
