For the past decades, with the help of media and doctors, sunscreen use has risen. They almost dominate the shelves at most drugstores. They are intended to protect the skin from sunburn and cancer. However, not all sunscreens are created equal. Most of them have harmful effects on the skin since they are made up of toxic and man-made chemicals. Moreover, some additives used in making sunscreens are even absorbed by your body and can be detected in your urine, blood samples, and breast milk.
Chemical sunscreens use one or more chemicals including oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate.
In a laboratory study reported at EWG.org, results show that some chemical UV filters may mimic hormones, and physicians report sunscreen-related skin allergies, which raises important questions about unintended human health consequences from frequent sunscreen application. Base on EWG’s 2018 sunscreen database, the most alarming ingredient found in sunscreens is oxybenzone.
Studies have shown that oxybenzone penetrates the skin and causes photo-sensitivity and it is also known as a “penetration enhancer.” This chemical helps other ingredients to easily penetrate the skin. It has been found to cause hormone disruptions, allergies and cell damage, which may lead to skin cancer.
In a report found at earthsfriends.com, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention conducted a study in 2008 and found that 96.8% of urine samples that had been collected and examined were shown to contain oxybenzone. It only goes to show that if you have used sunscreen with this ingredient, your body can store it in fatty tissues for up to a few days.
Other Ways To Help Protect The Skin From Dangerous Effects Of The Sun
Luckily, there were lots of options available for you to be able to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun. For instance, there are natural oils that can help prevent your skin from sunburn. They are widely available and are far less toxic than those sunscreens offered in the market.
Coconut Oil
Due to its skincare benefits, this oil has been used by many, such as for daily sun protection. However, using it needs constant reapplication because it only has a moderate protective effect.
Red Raspberry Oil
This is one of the strongest natural sunscreens. This oil is found to possess an SPF of between 30 and 50. It also helps improve skin healing due to its richness in vitamin E.
Wheatgerm Oil
Wheatgerm oil is rich in vitamin E, which helps in repairing the skin and prevents the skin from sun damage.
Carrot Seed Oil
This all-natural and non-toxic oil offers the same effect as those chemically produced-sunscreens.
Almond oil
If you don’t want to burn but still want a summer glow then almond oil can be your best natural option. It offers protective effects that are equivalent to an SPF 6 sun lotion.
