Summer is the time of year where most of us go camping, swimming, trekking, and some other outdoor activities along with our families and friends to enjoy the hot weather. This season is the time wherein, heart stroke and heat are at its peak. Most people want to eat junk foods, steak and drink beer after a long exhausting day. These foods are precursors for the increase in cholesterol, which in the long-run would end to a heart attack.
Unfortunately, if you are going to consult a doctor, he would automatically recommend a cholesterol-lowering agent, such as statins. To name a few, statins’ side effects include weaknesses and muscle pain, and interference of manufacture of coenzyme Q10 levels.
Taking these drugs don’t just make any sense especially if there are safer options as well as more effective and natural medicines that are readily available. Just take flaxseed as an example.
Flaxseeds are the richest plant source of omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs), which are vital components of cellular membranes, can improve blood flow, and help prevent blood clots that cause stroke and heart attacks. Studies also showed that omega-3s can lower blood cholesterol and triglycerides.
Aside from EFAs, flaxseeds are also an excellent source of soluble fiber which acts through natural cholesterol control mechanism where it binds to bile acids in the intestinal tract and interferes with absorption of cholesterol into the bloodstream.
It seems that this combination of EFAs and soluble fiber is the one that makes flaxseeds so effective in reducing cholesterol.
Incorporating Flaxseed Into Your Diet
Flaxseeds are tiny golden or brown seeds having a rich, nutty flavor. They can be sprinkled on yogurt, salads, or other foods. You can add a quarter cup of freshly ground flaxseed into your diet each day.
Due to the reason that the oils in ground flaxseed can quickly become rancid, pre-ground seed or flax oil should not be used. Purchase whole flaxseeds and grind them just before consumption. To grind, place whole seeds into a food processor, coffee grinder, blender, or food processor, and process for about five seconds.
After six months of consumption, for sure you will notice a great difference. It would be better if you measure your cholesterol level before you start your flaxseed therapy. Then, take a look at your cholesterol level after 6 months, to see the drastic difference.
