Treat Mosquito Bites Using Toothpaste, Honey, and Garlic

Your skin can be covered with unsightly, red welts due to mosquito bites. This could be itchy and irritating as it is impossible to shake for days.

Fortunately, there are ways to avoid getting bit in the first place as well as effective home remedies for mosquito bites.

Natural Remedies For Mosquito Bites

Garlic

For individuals with high blood pressure or heart disease, garlic is a popular natural remedy. Aside from this, garlic can also be used as a home remedy for a mosquito bite.

Mince up fresh garlic and mix with unscented lotion or coconut oil to help reduce the garlic’s potency. Apply the mixture on the bite area and leave for at least 10 minutes. Use a cool washcloth to wipe the area. If itching still persists, apply more of it later.

Ice

Inflammation is one of the most painful parts of a mosquito bite. A crushed ice can help relieve the swelling around the bite area.

Use a thin cloth to wrap the ice and press it against the bite. Do not directly put the ice on the skin as this can cause damage.

Baking Soda

The use of baking soda and water is a simple yet effective remedy for mosquito bites. Just combine 1 tablespoon of baking soda with enough amount of water to make a paste. Apply the mixture on the affected area. Rinse it off after 10 minutes.

Basil

The fragrant basil plant can be used as a mosquito bite remedy due to the presence of the chemical compound eugenol, which could relieve itchy skin.

Make a basil rub by boiling 2 cups of water and adding ½ an ounce of dried basil leaves. Leave the mixture to steep until it is cool. Dip a washcloth into the liquid and rub it gently on the affected area.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a well-known remedy for many medical conditions, from infections and blood glucose problems. It can also be used as a treatment for bug bites.

Put a drop of vinegar on the mosquito bite. It will reduce burning and stinging sensations and act as a natural disinfectant if you have been scratching too much.

Toothpaste

A small amount of regular toothpaste on the bite area can help relieve the itch, according to the Farmer’s Almanac. This is maybe due to the presence of menthol in the toothpaste as it creates a cooling sensation. Additionally, it can also reduce the pain caused by a fire ant bite.

Honey

Honey can help soothe an itching bite, as it contains anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. However, it is probably best if you do not wear it outside as this will attract more bugs.
Drop a small amount of honey on the affected area to get rid of swelling and ease the itch.
