Thyme May Help Boost Our Immunity

Thyme is a shrubby herb that adds instant flavor to cooking. It has an intense aroma and can be consumed in fresh or dried form.  This fragrant herb contains a number of minerals and vitamins needed by the body. It is more than just flavor to our favorite meals as it can possibly promote good health.

How Does It Help Our Immune System?

Thyme has natural antiviral properties that stimulate the body’s defenses against colds, flu, bronchitis, and sinusitis (1).

This common Mediterranean aromatic herb contains volatile oils thymol and carvacrol, which are also responsible for its strong anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties as well as the beautiful aroma we all know (2). Aside from this, thyme is also loaded with vitamin C and is also a good source of vitamin A (3).

In a study, experts found that those who drank ivy and thyme tea had a decrease in the frequency and severity of their coughs. Thyme tea may help reduce inflammation and relax the muscles in the throat (4).

Furthermore, the results of a study revealed that the powerful natural antiviral properties of thyme may offer some protection against colds and flu because it can kill some viruses (5).

One way to boost our immunity using this herb is by having a cup of thyme tea. Here’s how to make it (6).

Thyme Tea Recipe

Boil two cups of water. Place 2 sprigs of fresh or 2 teaspoons of dried thyme in a mug. If using dried thyme, place it in a tea infuser. Pour hot water over the thyme and let steep for 15 minutes. Remove the fresh thyme or tea infuser. Some fresh lemon juice or raw honey can be added depending on the desired taste.

Cold Brew Thyme Tea Recipe

Place thyme in a cold brew pitcher. Add 32 ounces of cold water. Some berries mint or cucumber slices can also be added. Let sit overnight to infuse. Remove thyme the next day and store it in the fridge for two to three days.

In addition to having some thyme tea, we may also add chopped thyme leaves to salads, soups, sauces, and seasoning mixes.

This effective and easy-to-find herb can also provide our body with other extra benefits aside from boosting our immune system. Some of the wonders that it can possibly do to our health are as follows:

  1. May help lower blood pressure
  2. May help boost our mood
  3. May help with gastrointestinal issue
  4. May help provide important minerals such as iron and Vitamin K
