Cloves are mainly used in tea and mulled drinks. For centuries, it has been one of the best remedies for all sorts of aches and pains. It possesses a natural painkilling and antibacterial property thus making it a powerful treatment for toothaches. Moreover, it also contains a strong anesthetic known as eugenol which similarly works as an antiseptic that fights bacteria that may cause infections. Cloves are often added to oral products such as toothpaste and mouthwash.
Here are some of the ways on how we can use cloves for toothaches.
Whole Cloves
Simply place a whole clove into the mouth or near the tooth that hurts, bite down & grind to release the oils, and wait. The oil has been released once there are a bitter taste and a tingling sensation on the tongue and gums. The analgesic effect will last for a couple of hours while the bitter taste will subside in less than ten minutes. Wait for 30 minutes before spitting them out and rinse the mouth out with water.
Clove Oil
Apply the oil on the aching tooth by dipping one end of a cotton swab into the clove oil and then applying it directly to the painful tooth and the inflamed area surrounding it. Take the cotton out and let the oil rest on the affected area for about 20 minutes. Try not to swallow the oil. Rinse the mouth with a solution of saltwater.
Ground Cloves
Ground the cloves normally and then add a quarter teaspoon of olive oil. Stir the mixture and dip a cotton swab. Apply the cotton on the inflamed area in the mouth and leaves it on the aching tooth for about 30 minutes. Spit it out and rinse the mouth with some warm salty water.
Clove Tea
Having a rich flavor and spicy aroma, clove tea is recommended for toothache. Simply make a tea by steeping one teaspoon of clove in 470 ml of boiling water.
Gargling With Clove Water
Grind a few cloves to a fine powder and then add into a glass of warm water. Gargle with water with clove powder for toothache. Doing this will help remove the bacteria present in the mouth (especially around the infected area) and can also act as a painkiller.
Cloves have natural painkilling and antibacterial properties. They are a common element in Chinese and Indian folk medicine where they have been used for centuries as a remedy for all sorts of aches and pains. Cloves are considered especially effective for the treatment of toothaches. If you’re suffering from a toothache, you can use dried cloves – the kind you stick in orange when making mulled wine – or clove oil, which can be found in most health food stores.
Dried cloves can be placed between the offending tooth and your cheek to kill the pain of your toothache. Alternatively, you can dip a cotton wool ball into a mixture of a couple of drops of clove oil and a small amount of olive oil.
